Easter Candles
Candles are a great accompaniment to any dining table, but during the Easter period they are really the perfect addition. Candles are a delightful way of making this Spring holiday extra special. During Easter candles are symbolic of Jesus, resurrection, rebirth and also new life. It is an Easter candle that leads the procession into the church at the Easter Vigil and thus becomes a dominant symbol for the season. Historically it is the Easter candle that first announces the news of the resurrection. In western Christianity a Paschal candle is used for this purpose, it is tall, bright, decorative, stately, it creates the first light in celebration of the resurrection. This large white candle is used in religious faiths such as the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, and Lutheran churches, among others. A new Paschal candle is blessed and lit every year at Easter, and is used throughout the Easter season and then throughout the year on special occasions. The term "Paschal" comes from the word Pesach, which in Hebrew means Passover, and relates to the Paschal mystery of salvation; of one of the central concepts of Catholic faith. It is sometimes referred to as the "Easter candle" or the "Christ candle."
