Crushed Lemon French Soap Bar

lynne travis

Here, at The Candle Tree we sell a great range of French soaps both in store at Harns Barn Gloucestershire and also online. The 125g Savon de Marseille crushed lemon soap bar is a gorgeously scented French soap which has many amazing qualities for an all round skintreat! It gently exfoliates while it cleanses and also adds a layer of moistening softeness as it is infused with Shea butter.

The lemon fresh scent of this artisan French soap is also highly beneficial to your mood and well being. What a better and invigorating way to start your day than this soap with it's distinct lemon fresh aroma. It is also brilliant as an uplifting cleansing bar after your daily workout. The citrus in this all-natural lemon soap gently exfoliates to slough away any dead and dry skin, while the shea butter moisturises. Wash with this bar soap daily, and enjoy beautifully soft skin.

This citrus soap is packed full of beauty-boosting vitamin C, which tones and detoxes while it cleanses. You will enjoy a reduction in pore size, and see tighter, firmer, and more youthful skin. As a natural astringent, lemon will work to heal acne, cuts, and minor skin abrasions.

Lemons and their extract are a wonderful natural addition to your skin care routine:

• Lemons’ antibacterial and antifungal properties make them a natural alternative to treat acne and blackheads. Simply slice open a lemon and rub it across your face. Or you can add a few drops of honey to a lemon half before applying it directly to the area where you have blackheads. Wait five to 10 minutes before rinsing off with cold water.

• Lemon juice’s citric acid gradually fades spots and evens your skin tone. Be cautious of open wounds or cuts on the face, as it can sting.

•  Save yourself a lot of money and time with a homemade teeth whitener using baking soda and lemon juice. Mix the two ingredients into a bubbly solution and put onto your teeth with a Q-tip. Leave on for no more than one minute (the acid is strong enough to break down tooth enamel) and gently scrub off with a toothbrush.

• But swiping a cotton swab with a little lemon juice is just as effective. Try doing this before bed and washing your face the next morning to prevent oily skin.

• Combine lemon juice and hair conditioner, comb through strands, sit in the sun for a few hours and wash out. Repeat these steps at least once a week, and you will notice that your hair is significantly lighter.

• Strengthen nails using olive oil and lemon juice. The solution will not only condition weak and brittle nails, but it will also whiten yellowing nails.

• Massaging a combination of household staples like coconut oil, olive oil and raw honey with lemon juice onto your scalp is a simple solution for dry scalp and dandruff.

• Another overnight beauty treatment that only requires slicing open a lemon is an exfoliant for chapped lips. Rub the fruit onto your pucker, then wash off the next morning. The lemon juice will remove any dead skin cells so that your lipstick goes on super smooth.

• Make a homemade cleanser with lemon juice, yogurt and an essential oil like lavender or chamomile. Massage this on to remove dirt and bacteria, while moisturising your skin at the same time.

• Also, don’t forget lemon juice squeezed into your glass of water is a fabulous internal cleansing treat for your body!

lynne travis

Our 125g Savon de Marseille Aloe Vera Soap is beautifully enriched with BIO shea butter. Artisan handcrafted French vegetable soap, certified without animal fat and made in Marseille from rigorously selected raw materials.

Aloe Vera has been used in skin care for thousands of years. Egyptian queens such as Cleopatra and Nefertiti believed that bathing in 'the plant of immortality' would enhance and prolong their beauty. Alexander The Great used Aloe Vera as a healing solution for wounded soldiers on the battlefield. In early modern medicine, it was used to heal and calm the skin. It is known as the “miracle plant” in Ayurvedic medicine.

These days Aloe Vera is included in many of skin creams and cosmetics. In fact, many skin care and make up products list Aloe Vera as the first ingredient, as a highly beneficial replacement for water. Its benefits are due to a combination of a very wide range of goodies including Vitamins A and B, folic acid, enzymes, proteins, amino acids, and good fatty acids.

Aloe Vera extract is best obtained from the flesh of its inner leaf. Aloe Vera juice, extract or oil helps rejuvenate the skin and promote healing of wounds and treatment of sunburn. It also adds a wonderful texture to soaps, leaving the skin soft and smooth.

The Aloe, which has a pH similar to our own skin, is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is also known for its ability to relieve itching and its moisturising effect on the skin. It is soothing, emollient, antibacterial, promotes the growth of new skin, moisturises, and protects against the effects of ageing. It is rich in natural moisture and also helps the skin keep its natural moisture too.

Use this French beauty bar to cleanse from head-to-toe, even on your face. It will help to soothe inflammation, and its antiseptic properties can be used to cleanse sunburns, cuts, and other minor abrasions. Most over-the-counter soap is made with harsh chemicals that strip your skin of its natural pH balance. However, aloe’s pH is similar to that of natural skin pH, so you can cleanse without any harsh drying effects.

When you use our Aloe Vera savon de Marseille bar as your daily soap, you will enjoy super soft and ultra-hydrated skin. The combination of aloe and shea butter provide you with a cleaner that doubles as your daily moisturiser. This gentle cleanser is perfect for the entire family, even for young infants and children!

Our Verbena Soap is French and is made by Savon de Marseille, a french soap maker. The ingredients are 100% natural and have not been tested on animals as well as being enriched with soothing shea butter.

Lemon Verbena, also known as Herb Louisa and Aloysia Triphylla, is native to Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Central America. This plant was named after Maria Luisa, the Princess of Parma. It was brought into Europe by the returning Spanish sometime in the 17th or 18th century. Lemon Verbena flowers its pretty purple buds during August to October. It blooms during late summer and is used for its strong lemon scent. The essential oil is extracted from this herb that has various healing properties.

Lemon verbena oil has actually been made use of for centuries and it was a well-known therapeutic oil throughout the Victorian era. Particularly for healing muscle spasms, indigestion and also as a sedative.

Lemon Verbena is known for its therapeutic properties today. It breaks down cellulite, and hence, offers a healing, toning and relaxing effect to the skin. That is the reason this herb is often used in the preparation of natural soaps. Lemon Verbena soap suits all skin types and makes the skin feel soft and toned. The essential oil of this herb is gentle on the skin and helps maintain the proper balance of the skin’s natural oils. The soap helps to give the skin an even tone.

Lemon Verbena has mild astringent qualities that help in cleaning the skin and getting rid of bacteria that cause acne and pimples. It also aids in getting rid of mild facial scars and blemishes.

The Lemon Verbena oil present in the soap gets rid of excess sebum and pollutants from the skin without causing excessive dryness. It also gets rid of bacteria that cause acne, thereby leaving you with a blemish-free skin.

Its plant-derived oils help in giving the skin a nourished and clean feeling. It offers smoothness to skin and uplifts it after every wash. The soap contains the goodness of flavonoids that soothe and nourish the skin, thereby giving it a radiant appearance.

Easter Candles

lynne travis

Candles are a great accompaniment to any dining table, but during the Easter period they are really the perfect addition. Candles are a delightful way of making this Spring holiday extra special.

Easter Candle Setting

During Easter candles are symbolic of Jesus, resurrection, rebirth and also new life. It is an Easter candle that leads the procession into the church at the Easter Vigil and thus becomes a dominant symbol for the season. Historically it is the Easter candle that first announces the news of the resurrection. In western Christianity a Paschal candle is used for this purpose, it is tall, bright, decorative, stately, it creates the first light in celebration of the resurrection. This large white candle is used in religious faiths such as the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, and Lutheran churches, among others. A new Paschal candle is blessed and lit every year at Easter, and is used throughout the Easter season and then throughout the year on special occasions. The term "Paschal" comes from the word Pesach, which in Hebrew means Passover, and relates to the Paschal mystery of salvation; of one of the central concepts of Catholic faith. It is sometimes referred to as the "Easter candle" or the "Christ candle."

We have some beautiful elegant Easter candles which are perfectly suited for the Easter period. At The Candle Tree we sell St Eval white classic candles tied in bundles of 4. These ½” x 6” bundle of 4 candles have been hand wrapped with pretty rustic raffia. Great for every occasion and ideal to help you set the scene. Whether it be to create a relaxing atmosphere at home, or as an Easter table setting, these unscented bundles are just perfect. Each of these hand crafted church candles are made by using the traditional method of drawing and made with the highest quality blended mineral wax with vegetable oils and natural cotton wick.

St Eval has a scented version of the classic candle, these beautifully simple dinner candles will add that touch of everyday luxury to your dinner table or mantel piece. Perfect for Easter, special occasions and weddings. These Inspiritus scented 7/8"x10" candles are sold in pairs. Spring into Easter!

lynne travis

Easter is nearly upon us and it felt like a long winter wait but Spring is well and truly here! The countryside is bursting with daffodils and awash with lively spring lambs!

Here are some intriguing facts about Easter:

• The name Easter owes its origin from Eastre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess who symbolises hare and egg.

• Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Christ three days after his death. It is the oldest Christian holiday and the most important day of the church year. However, unlike most days in the Christian calendar, Easter does not have a fixed date.

• Easter doesn’t fall on a fixed date in the normal Gregorian or Julian calendars, which follow the cycle of the sun. Instead is determined by the lunar calendar, which is based on the phases of the moon.

• Easter is scheduled to fall on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox around April 14. So, in Western Christianity, Easter will always fall between March 22nd and April 25th.

• Even before the birth of Christianity, the egg was seen as a symbol of Spring, a celebration of the rebirth and reinvigoration after the harshness of winter.

• The Mesopotamians - an ancient Christian community living in an area roughly covered today by Iraq, Syria and Kuwait - used to stain eggs red to symbolise the blood of Christ.

• Eggs would then be cracked against one another, leaving just empty shells - a symbol of the empty tomb Jesus left behind. The tradition survives today in the shape of egg rolling, representing the rolling away of the rock from Jesus' tomb.

• Over time, Easter eggs became more and more elaborately decorated, perhaps most famously by Russian jeweller Peter Carl Fabergé, creator of the priceless Fabergé eggs as Easter gifts for Tsars Alexander III and Nicholas II.

famous-easter-eggs-by-faberge-in-st-petersburg.jpg

• In 2007, a Fabergé egg covered in diamonds sold for almost £9 million. This egg is very special because, every hour, a cockerel made of jewels pops up from the top of the egg, flaps its wings four times, nods it's head three times and makes a crowing noise!

• The gesture of giving eggs at Easter has been traced back to Egyptians, Persians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans. Back then the egg was a symbol of life. Christians consider Easter eggs to symbolise joy and celebration, new life and resurrection.

• The introduction of chocolate eggs is a relatively new phenomenon, originating in France and Germany in the 19th century. As chocolate production became more sophisticated, the Easter festival, like Christmas, became more marketable. The first chocolate egg in the UK was produced in 1873 by Fry’s of Bristol.

• Every child in the UK receives an average of 8.8 Easter eggs every year – double their recommended calorie intake for a whole week. When tucking into a chocolate bunny rabbit, 76% of people bite the ears off first.

• The Easter Bunny tradition made its way to the US in the 18th century. It is believed to have originated in Europe where it was actually the Easter Hare. Other Easter traditions include wearing Easter bonnets, making Easter baskets and having Easter egg hunts.

• The white lily, the symbol of the resurrection, is the special Easter flower.

• The Ukrainian traditional act of painting eggs is called Pysanka. The word Pysanka comes from the verb pysaty, "to write", as traditionally designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax.

Useful Candle Burning Tips

lynne travis

For a great relaxing candle experience, you need to adhere to proper candle care and maintenance. The first time you burn a candle is important, and as a rule candles should burn one hour for every 1 inch in the diameter of the actual candle size.

One of the problems that can occur when burning a candle is when wax forms around the outside of the wax vessel. This is referred to as a ‘memory ring’ or 'tunnelling'. Eventually the candle becomes difficult to light and drowns out from the wax melting down on top of it. To prevent this, the first time you light the candle do not trim the wick. Depending on the wax and size of the vessel, you may need a flame that burns large and hot enough to melt the wax all the way to the edge. However, if, after you light the wick, there is any smoke at all, then extinguish the flame and trim the wick slightly. Let the candle burn long enough to get the entire top liquid wax, if doesn't melt all the way to the edge don't panic, but get as close as you can. After the first burn, try to let the candle burn for long stretches as often as you can to keep that really wide opening and prevent tunneling later on.

Yankee Candles have a solution for these problems with their Illuma-Lid. This sits on top of their house warmer jars and helps steady the flame to keep a nice even wax burn inside.

However, if your candle has already tunnelled and you can't fix the candle there's still ways to enjoy the fragrance. You can either place the candle on a candle warmer and melt the wax that way without lighting the candle. Though you won't be able to enjoy the ambiance of a burning candle, you will be able to enjoy the fragrance. You can also remove the dry, hard wax and place it in small portions on the top of a tealight warmer. This is another way to warm the wax without lighting the candle. A nice little tealight candle under the warmer adds some ambiance and candlelight while the scented wax on top provides fragrance. Use caution with all these techniques to ensure the wax doesn't become too hot and ignite. Always follow the manufacturers instructions for maximum burn times.

CANDLE SAFETY RULES

• Always burn your candle on a heat resistant surface, keep it away from any breezes or drafts, to minimize smoke.

• Never leave your candle unattended whilst lit, and keep out of reach of children and pets.

• Always keep a burning candle within sight. Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep. Be sure the wick ember is no longer glowing.

• Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Keep burning candles away from furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, flammable decorations, etc.

• Keep burning candles out of the reach of children and pets. Although candles may smell like food, they are not edible.

• Always use a candle-holder specifically designed for candle use. The holder should be heat resistant, sturdy, and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax.

• Be sure the candle-holder is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface. This can help prevent heat damage to underlying surfaces and prevent glass containers from breaking.

• We suggest trimming the wick every 4 hours of burn time. When wick trimming, always extinguish the flame, let the candle come to room temperature, and trim the wick to 1/4 of inch before relighting. Long or crooked wicks can cause uneven burning and dripping, we recommend Yankee Candle wick trimmer for a clean safe cut.

• Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times.

• If your candle is burning unevenly, simply move the extinguished wick to the center with spoon, handle while the wax is still soft.

• Keep burning candles away from drafts, vents, ceiling fans and air currents. This will help prevent rapid, uneven burning, and avoid flame flare-ups and sooting. Drafts can also blow nearby lightweight items into the flame where they could catch fire.

• Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room. Don’t burn too many candles in a small room or in a poor ventilated area.

• Storing your candle is easy, but important to retain the fragrance oils which can be sensitive to temperature and light. Make sure your unused candles are stored in a dark place away from direct sunlight, like a cupboard or box to repent fading and discolouration.

• Never touch or move a burning candle or container candle when the wax is liquid.

• Never use a knife or sharp object to remove wax drippings from a glass holder. It might scratch, weaken, or cause the glass to break upon subsequent use.

• Place burning candles at least three inches apart from one another. This helps ensure they don’t melt one another, or create their own drafts to cause improper burning.

• Use a snuffer to extinguish a candle. It’s the safest way to prevent hot wax splatters.

Candle-Snuffer-24cm.jpg

• Never extinguish candles with water. The water can cause the hot wax to splatter and might cause a glass container to break.

• Be very careful if using candles during a power outage. Flashlights and other battery powered lights are safer sources of light during a power failure.

• Extinguish a candle if it repeatedly smokes, flickers, or the flame becomes too high.  The candle isn’t burning properly. Cool, trim the wick, then check for drafts before relighting.

• Never use a candle as a night light.

• Always read and follow the manufacturer’s use and safety instructions carefully. Don’t burn a candle longer than the manufacturer recommends.

• Don’t burn a candle all the way down. Extinguish the flame if it comes too close to the holder or container. For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when 2 inches of wax remains or ½ inch if in a container. Once there is only half an inch of wax remaining of your candle, you should cease using it. This prevents possible heat damage to the underneath surface or the vessel itself.

• Some candle brands are designed to self-extinguish, such as Yankee Candle and Root. This function brings added peace of mind. However, it's important that you trim your wick to 1/4 inch from the top of the candle before each use.

Yankee Candle Scenterpiece

lynne travis

Yankee Candle have created a new way to fragrance your home with all your favourite Yankee Candle fragrances; the Scenterpiece melts the wax using heat from below. Unlike the WaxMelts, with Scenterpiece the wax is contained in Yankee Candle’s new MeltCup. The MeltCup keeps the wax in place, meaning you can change to different fragrances, quickly and cleanly. There is no wax to clean up and less waste. It’s great to have a choice of MeltCups for different times and occasions to suit your mood and season. For example, the Sicilian Lemon Scenterpiece MeltCup is a lovely refreshing scent to use in the morning to enliven and enhance your day ahead. Midnight Jasmine MeltCup has a gorgeous perfumed  aroma to welcome the evening in and drown out any cooking smells. Whilst a lovely relaxing Lemon and Lavender Scenterpiece creates a soothing and calm environment for unwinding in the evenings.

We have 8 different Scenterpieces to choose from, there are a range of different colours and designs so there should be something to suit everyone’s taste. Yankee Weave Scenterpiece (below) is a popular one and it has a neutral colour and design which suits any decor.

scenterpiece_weave_.jpg

In contrast we have a Yankee Eclipse Scenterpiece which is designed like a unique piece of pottery, with dip dyed colours and is a fabulous art piece in itself.

Yankee Eclipse Scenterpiece

As with all Yankee Candle products you know you are buying a quality product, the Scenterpiece is actually a lovely ornamental addition to your home. The wax cups fragrance all deliver a great scent that travels throughout the whole house and lasts long after the Scenterpiece has been turned off. There is a beautiful simplicity with the Scenterpiece, it simply requires that you select the scent you want to use, remove the lid and place it into the Scenterpiece dish, switch on and sit back and enjoy fabulous aromas. If you are a fan of Yankee Candle then the Scenterpiece is for you!

We also have a great wide selection of  MeltCups available, examples include a lovely fresh Clean Cotton MeltCup, a cosy Home Sweet Home MeltCup, to the exotic aroma of a Moroccan Argan Oil MeltCup. Each wax MeltCup can give up to 24 hours of fragrance and can be re-used until completely finished, so you will never tire of one fragrance!

For a limited time only we are offering a FREE MeltCup with every Scenterpiece Warmer purchase, worth £5.99! You will receive a Vanilla Lime MeltCup, a smooth and refreshing fragrance with the creamy richness of vanilla with sweet cane sugar and a zesty lime twist.

Vanilla Lime Scenterpiece Easy Meltcup

So, how are MeltCup’s different to WaxMelts? Whilst the wax and fragrances are the same, the new MeltCups come in a plastic container. This makes it super easy to remove for a different fragrance. It means you can have the elegance and safety of melting wax (rather than an open flame with a candle), but also the ease of changing fragrance when you want to! Yankee Candle MeltCups cannot be used in the WaxMelt burner because the wax in the MeltCup is held in place by a plastic cup, which could be a fire hazard. We only recommend that you use the MeltCup with your Scenterpiece.

To take advantage of this fantastic offer, look at our range of Scenterpieces:

Savon de Marseille Patchouli Soap

lynne travis

50% Discount in March! Whilst stocks last!

Savon de Marseille soap has a long and interesting history. In the Middle Ages, big blocks of soap were first crafted in the Mediterranean port city of Marseille with olive oil from local groves, marine ash and sea salted water. The quality of these soaps was immediately recognised throughout Europe. In 1688 French law declared that only soaps made according to certain ancient methods could bear the important stamp Savon de Marseille. The early 1900s brought the arrival of mass-produced synthetic soaps and detergents. Washing machines made soap blocks less necessary in every home, but many households continued to trust only the purity and gentleness soaps from Marseille to wash everything from linens and floors to little faces.

Savon de Marseille is still hand crafted in Marseille, just as it has been for hundreds of years. It takes two weeks to make Savon de Marseille. The delicate mixture of olive oil, alkaline ash from sea plants and Mediterranean Sea salted water are heated for ten days in antique cauldrons. They are then poured into open pits where it hardens. Lastly cut into cubes and stamped, the soaps are then set out to dry in the sun and wind. Now less than five soap makers still craft Marseille Soap according to the centuries-old tradition. But this legendary soap, which was once such a basic necessity for so many generations, is being rediscovered for the natural luxury and delicate care it provides. Once you experience the pure gentle magic of Marseille Patchouli soap you may never use anything else.

Savon de Marseille Patchouli soap is totally biodegradable, requires little packaging and its manufacture is environmentally friendly. The ingredients are 100% natural and the addition of Patchouli oil can help reduce tension and lift your spirits. Just inhaling its characteristically musky, woodsy, earthy scent can have a deeply relaxing, even aphrodisiac effect on our mind and body. Patchouli is recognised by aromatherapists as being effective for helping skin disorders, helping with dry skin, eczema, acne and skin irritations. The specific properties of Patchouli oil include use as an anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, astringent, deodorant, stimulating and tonic agent.

Treat yourself to our Savon de Marseille Patchouli Soap whilst stocks last at this special price! Experience its cleansing, earthy aroma which will sooth and comfort!

Shea Butter, the magical moisturiser!

lynne travis

Shea butter is a naturally occurring fat extracted from the nut of the African shea tree from where it takes it's name. Shea fat is made up of stearic acid and oleic acid and is widely used as a moisturiser. Shea butter is also so pure and natural that it is edible and widely used in the chocolate industry as a substitute for cocoa butter. In some African countries such as Benin, Shea butter is used as a cooking oil, as a waterproofing wax, for hairdressing, for candle-making, and as an ingredient in medicinal ointments. It is used by makers of traditional African percussion instruments to increase the durability of wood and leather tuning straps. Medicinally, Shea butter is used for the management of sinusitis and relief of nasal congestion, it is also massaged into joints and other parts of the body where pain occurs.

Shea butter extraction is a long process, if done the traditional method: First, the outer pulp of the fruit is removed, when dry, the Shea nut is separated form the outer shell. The Shea nuts are the crushed, usually with a pestle and mortar. The nuts are then roasted and ground into a paste, with water gradually added. The next vital stage is the separation of the oils, the paste in kneaded by hand in large basins and water is added to separate the nut butter oils. As they float to the top, the butter curds are removed and the water is squeezed out. The curds are melted in large open pots and then cooled so it will harden which is then formed into balls.

This wondrous beauty product was being used cosmetically as early as Cleopatras Egypt. In ancient Egypt it was used to protect the hair and skin in the fierce sun and desert winds. Shea butter benefits include:

Shea butter is a skin superfood that comes from the seeds of the fruit of the Shea (Karite) tree and that is naturally rich in vitamins A, E and F. It offers UV protection of around SPF 6 and provides the skin with essential fatty acids and the nutrients necessary for collagen production. Shea butter has been used in Africa and other countries for years to improve skin and hair.

Moisturising: The concentration of natural vitamins and fatty acids in Shea butter makes it incredibly nourishing and moisturising for skin. It is often used to remedy dry skin and to help protect the skin’s natural oils. It alleviates the pain associated with tightness and itching of eczema and dry winter skin conditions.

Reduces Inflammation: A 2010 study found that due to its 'cinnamic acid' and other natural properties, shea butter was anti-inflammatory. One compound in particular, ‘lupeol cinnamate’, was found to reduce skin inflammation and even potentially help avoid skin mutations. This also makes it beneficial for some people with acne and scar tissue damage.

Skin Smoothing: Shea butter aids in the skin’s natural collagen production and contains oleic, stearic, palmitic and linolenic acids that protect and nourish the skin to prevent drying. With long term use, many people report skin softening and strengthening as well as wrinkle reduction. Shea butter melts at body temperature. Proponents of its use for skin care maintain that it absorbs rapidly into the skin, acts as a "refatting" agent, and has good water-binding properties.

Used regularly, Shea butter products can enliven tired dried out winter skin and boost your skins natural oils! Treat yourself and your skin, ready for the warmer months, Spring is just around the corner…Take a look at our Shea butter enriched products:

The Kilner jar is a popular seller, especially with the trend for home baking, influenced by the success of ‘The Great British Bake Off’ and internet food bloggers. We also have a selection of distinctive head lights, including a Budda light and classic mannequin head light, for those requiring more of a unique art piece.

budda head led light

The difference with our jar lights is that we are using LED bulbs. LEDs are an extremely energy efficient way of lighting and consume up to 90% less power than incandescent bulbs. LEDs only use only a fraction of the energy of an incandescent light bulb saving money and energy. They also boast less maintenance and replacement costs due to the long LED lifespan.

Here’s 10 great reasons to switch to LED bulbs long term:

  1. Long Life - LED Lighting features long operational life time expectations.
  2. Energy Efficiency - LED lighting is more energy efficient.
  3. Ecologically Friendly - LED lighting  is much more eco-friendly.
  4. Durable Quality - LED Illumination can withstand rough conditions.
  5. Zero UV Emissions - LED Lighting features close to no UV emissions.
  6. Design Flexibility - LED lighting has powerful flexible design features.
  7. Operational in extremely cold or hot temperatures.
  8. Light Dispersement - LED lights achieve higher application efficiency.
  9. Instant Lighting & Frequent Switching - LEDs can be turned On/off many times.
  10. Low-Voltage - LED Lighting Can Run on Low-Voltage Power Supply, such as solar powered supplies.

Glass jar lights give a subtle rustic ambiance and cast a glow into a room. These lights can be used singulary or grouped together. This works well with the smaller bulb ones and you can custom make your own designer light fitting. They look fresh, modern and unique without the need for a fussy lampshade and they are able to cast light in all directions.

Our range of jar lights look great and are a statement piece for any environment. Available as a bespoke made to order option. They come in all shapes and sizes and we have various types and colour ways of old fashioned braided electrical cord to choose from.

glass jar lights

The kit will arrive with all the jam jars wired up ready to be fed through the ceiling rose (for you to pick the height at which you'd like them to hang) and then ready for an electrician to wire up into the ceiling for you.

Please give us a call to discuss the options available and we can advise on fittings and choice of cord. Alternatively, if you aren’t too far way, pop by The Candle Tree and you can browse at your own leisure!

Valentine's Day!

lynne travis

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, so look no further as we have an abundance of themed gifts to treat a loved one or simply mark the day for yourself with a special candle.

Every February 14, across the UK and in other places around the world, chocolates, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint?  Valentines Day, originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honouring one or more early saints named Valentinus, and is recognised as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world.

The day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting gifts and sending love letters. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. The earliest surviving Valentines in English appeared in 1477. Valentine's Day is also mentioned ruefully by Ophelia in William Shakespeare's Hamlet (1600–1601):

"To-morrow is Saint Valentine's day,
All in the morning betime,
And I a maid at your window,
To be your Valentine”.

Here are some interesting facts about St Valentine’s Day!

  • In Japan, women are expected to give chocolate and other gifts to men on Valentine's Day. This tradition was started as a marketing campaign by Japanese chocolate companies. Men are not off the hook, unfortunately; they are expected to return the favour on March 14th, commonly known as ‘White Day’.
  • In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. Today, to wear your heart on your sleeve means being transparent with your affections.
  • Three different Saint Valentines have been mentioned by the martyrologies of the Roman Catholic Church.
  • The Catholic Church struck St. Valentine’s Day from its official calendar in 1969.
  • The phrase "Sweets for the sweet" is a line from Shakespeare's Hamlet.
  • Girls of medieval times ate bizarre foods on St. Valentine's Day to make them dream of their future spouse.
  • The ancient Romans celebrated the Feast of Lupercalia on Feb. 14 in honour of Juno, the queen of the Roman gods and goddesses. Juno was also the goddess of women and marriage.
  • Casanova, well known as "The World's Greatest Lover," ate chocolate to make him virile!
  • Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines.
  • Over 50 percent of all Valentine's Day cards are purchased in the six days prior to the holiday, making Valentine's Day a procrastinator's delight.
  • Teachers will receive the most Valentine's Day cards, followed by children, mothers, wives, sweethearts and pets.
  • Every Valentine's Day, the Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare's lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet.
  • In the 1800s doctors commonly advised their heartbroken patients to eat chocolate, claiming it would sooth their pain. To this day, many women find comfort in a box of chocolates when dealing with heartbreak.
valentines day heart candles

Candles are synonymous with romance. Our range of Valentine's Day Candle Gifts make it easy to create the perfect relaxed atmosphere. If you are planning a special evening with the one you love, incorporate some dinner candles to set the mood. Other ideas include:

  • Use a collection of tea light candles to light a pathway, you can have this lead to a surprise, like an evening picnic or a bubble bath or a glass of champagne!
