Red Clay Soap

Red Clay Soap

Here at The Candle Tree, we sell a wide range of French soaps, all with equally beneficial and unique qualities. One of these special soaps is our red clay soap, which cleanses, detoxifies and exfoliates the skin, leaving it refreshed, toned and rejuvenated. The aniseed essential oil in this bar is perfect for awakening the senses in the morning, ensuring you are feeling positive for the day ahead. The antiseptic qualities of cedarwood are fantastic for the skin. The combination of cedarwood and aniseed help to ease cold symptoms, with their spritely scent. The ground cinnamon spice included may also help skin conditions and acts as an antiseptic.

Red clay is globally renowned for its cleansing and anti-aging benefits, and our argile rouge (red clay) savon de Marseille soap makes it easier than ever to use!

Gentle Skin Detox

One of the reasons that French red clay is so popular, is because it provides mild and gentle detox and exfoliation. This daily soap is gentle enough for sensitive skin, as well as ageing skin. Its naturally occurring trace minerals will help to soothe irritated skin.

Accessible

One of the most challenging things about clay is that it is difficult to apply from head-to-toe. This soap allows you all the accessible beauty benefits of red clay, without all the mess. Use daily as you would any normal bar soap.

Tone and Perfect

This natural savon de Marseille soap will detox, tone, and firm your skin, leaving you with a healthy and luminous glow. Perfect for treating and soothing acne, and for combating the visible signs of ageing.

Cosmetic Red Clay

Here are some impressive benefits of red clay French soap:

    •    Suitable for all skin types:  dry/ mature/aging/dehydrated skin

    •    Detoxifies & exfoliates

    •    Draws out impurities & toxins

    •    Refines the pores

    •    Toning & firming

    •    Stimulates circulation

    •    Tightens pores

    •    Removes dead skin cells

    •    Hydrates & increases firmness

    •    Moisturises & improves overall texture of skin

    •    Refreshes tired & 'washed out' skin

    •    Softens dry & rough skin

    •    Balances oil secretion

    •    Beneficial for broken capillaries

Use our red clay (argile rouge) French soap every day, or alternate it 1 to 3 days a week for gentle exfoliation and a mild detox.

The Candle Tree in Longhope will close at the end of September and a new shop in Gloucester will open in mid October, where will have a wonderful Christmas set up, so please keep an eye on our announcements for more exact dates!

New Location College Street Gloucester

Situated on the attractive College street out new shop has a lovely view of the Cathedral one end and some beautiful Georgian architecture on the other side. Gloucester Abbey was a Benedictine abbey in the city of Gloucester, England. Since 1541 it has been Gloucester Cathedral. An interesting historical fact is that when Henry V111 and Anne Boleyn visited Gloucester on July 31st 1535, they entered the grounds of St Peters Abbey (Gloucester Cathedral) not by the main gateway in St. Mary’s Street, but by "Seynt Edwardes Lane” (College Street).

Apart from it’s use as an access to the Abbey, College Street was initially residential. As the population of the city and it’s trade grew, some of the properties in the lane became commercial. This may also account for various name changes such as  'Ironmongers row'.

College street was initially very narrow, it was originally only 10 feet and 9 inches wide. It was widened by the Gloucester Cathedral Approaches Company in the 1890’s. This was to provide a ceremonial access to the Cathedral. This also made it much easier for trades to pass through and it became a busy hub of commerce. The widening of the street also meant that, today, as we turn into College Street we are greeted with a magnificent view of Gloucester Cathedral.

DSC_0058.n.duo.jpg

Gloucester Cathedral is really a stunning building, in fact many of the former abbey buildings have been Grade I listed, including the Cathedral, the Cathedral Cloisters, Cathedral Treasury and the Cathedral Chapter House, together with the Little Cloister, Little Cloister House, the Infirmary and Church House, the former Abbot's Lodging. Pilgrims came during the Medieval period, and they still come, but for a different reason. Today, they come not to pray, but to admire the beauty of this fine building. Most of the great English cathedrals can trace some part of their design to architectural or stylistic innovations that were developed at Gloucester. For example, The origins of the breathtaking fan vault at King's College Chapel in Cambridge can be traced back to the cloisters at Gloucester.

DSC_0061.n.jpg

Gloucester is well served for high street brands in the city centre, King's Walk Shopping Centre and Eastgate Shopping Centre. Every Friday, you will find the best in locally sourced produce at the popular Farmers Market on The Cross (where the 'Gate Streets' meet). The City Centre also hosts seasonal craft markets. The Cathedral Quarter where we are (Westgate Street, College Street and the picturesque College Court) is where you will find friendly and independent boutiques - perfect for gift shopping. There is also Gloucester Quays which has become a favourite destination for visitors with its great value designer brands, as well as its multiplex cinema, restaurant quarter and many festivals. Also, Gloucester is fortunate to have a range of anitique shops and flea markets for shoppers browsing for unique collectibles. Come and pay us a visit at our new location, we will have a larger selection of our wonderful candles, natural soaps, superb gifts and lots lots more!

Seaweed Soap

lynne travis

Here at The Candle Tree we stock a wonderful selection of French soaps, in particular our seaweed soap has extra special skin benefits. All our 100g French Artisan soaps are enriched with Bio Argan Oil, these soaps are without artificial fragrance and colour.

Seaweed soap brings nourishment, exfoliation and a natural source of nutrients to your skin care routine. In this case, nature really does provide everything truly beneficial for your skin. Take a look at these benefits more closely:

• Exfoliation

Seaweed is a natural and gentle exfoliator. This helps naturally and gently remove the dead layers of skin, as well as assisting in removing dirt and oil that can clog our pores. Its inherent exfoliation action rejuvenates and cleanses without using harsh chemicals.

• Elasticity
The vitamins and minerals in our seaweed soap will help to increase circulation and detoxify your skin. This will help to keep your skin healthy, toned, plumped and reduces imperfections such as scars, stretch marks, and cellulite. Seaweed does wonders to aging skin by working to promote tissue regeneration activities in the skin to create skin elasticity.

Hair Nourishment
Seaweed minerals help to nourish the hair by feeding the shafts and the ducts of the scalp with nutrients to help improve the health of the hair. Seaweed has a complete spectrum of chelated minerals, which makes it easy to absorb into your hair giving dull lifeless hair their texture and shine.

• Purifying & Detoxifying
Seaweed extracts are a popular choice for oily or acne prone skin because of it’s ability to work gently to purify and detoxify whilst promoting circulation and healthy skin rejuvenation.

• Hydrating
Seaweed is full of lipids, proteins, minerals and vitamins, which are easy to absorb to deeply moisturize and nourish the skin. Research also shows that nutrients from seaweeds are better able to penetrate deep into the skin more efficiently than other skin care ingredients to help your skin maintain it’s firmness and hydration.

• Re-mineralizing
Seaweed is packed with high concentrations of minerals such as fluorine, magnesium and calcium which will enable you to achieve and restore a radiant skin complexion. The minerals contained in seaweed help to maintain the skins natural moisture balance – which is neither too dry or too oily.

• Anti-inflammatory
Seaweed has therapeutic properties in the treatment of sensitive and allergy prone skin. Seaweed is high in vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12 which is useful in protecting the skins surface and reduction of inflammation. It is a used as active ingredient for many in modern skin care products because of it’s natural tendency to reduce excessive irritation and redness.

• Oxygenating
If you combine seaweed into a skin massage for approximately 10 minutes, the the oxygen content on the massaged areas will increase by up to 15 percent! Lymphatic drainage is also improved since the strokes and pressure on the skin helps in the release of toxins.

• Natural, Organic and Pure
Seaweed in the deep seas is as pure as they come. You can be sure that there are no artificial genetic manipulation or fertilizers used meaning what you are putting on and into your bodies is chemical free.

Our handmade French soaps are infused with many natural ingredients and our seaweed soap captures all the richness of the sea. Add this to your daily skin routine and see the amazing benefits for yourself!

Cherry Skin Care

THE CHERRY ON TOP OF YOUR SKINCARE AND BEAUTY ROUTINE!

The cherry season is upon us so celebrate these wonderful luscious fruits by incorporating into your skin care routine. The bright colour of the red cherry comes from its rich supply of anthocyanins, chlorogenic acid, quercetin and kaempferol which is high in antioxidants. They also act as anti inflammatory agent which can help a wide range of skin conditions. Our cherry bar soap is the perfect combination of these benefits!

Cherry Facts!

• Cherries originated in the area between the Black and Caspian seas of Asia Minor and they are believed to have spread to Ancient Greece and the Mediterranean (where they were first cultivated) by 70 BC.

• History tells us that cherries were integral part of the Legionnaire’s diet and they were introduced to Europe with the establishment of the Roman Empire. Throughout history, cherries were always valued as a food source and during the 15th and 16th centuries they were used for medicinal purposes.

• Cherries may benefit people suffering from chronic inflammatory conditions such as gout, pancreatitis, or prostitis, as well as allergic conditions including asthma, hay fever, eczema and hives because they contain the compounds cyanidin and quercetin.

• Cherries in general are rich in hormone and antioxidant melatonin, which controls the sleep/wake cycle of the brain. Studies suggest it can be used to improve sleep quality.

• Red cherries contain 17 different antioxidant compounds which are by far the highest levels of antioxidants in comparison to any other fruits. Antioxidants fight free radicals which are responsible for making you look old thus effectively slowing down the aging process.

• Cherry juice is highly recommended as an alternative treatment for acne, vulgaris and rosacea. Rich in vitamin A, red cherries have antibacterial properties that fight skin bacteria and effectively remove toxins from the blood that often are the culprits behind acne outbreaks.

• Red Cherry benefits for hair: Studies suggest consumption of red cherries which are a rich source of antioxidants is good for hair growth and can control hair fall effectively.

Lemons and their extract are a wonderful natural addition to your skin care routine:

• Lemons’ antibacterial and antifungal properties make them a natural alternative to treat acne and blackheads. Simply slice open a lemon and rub it across your face. Or you can add a few drops of honey to a lemon half before applying it directly to the area where you have blackheads. Wait five to 10 minutes before rinsing off with cold water.

• Lemon juice’s citric acid gradually fades spots and evens your skin tone. Be cautious of open wounds or cuts on the face, as it can sting.

•  Save yourself a lot of money and time with a homemade teeth whitener using baking soda and lemon juice. Mix the two ingredients into a bubbly solution and put onto your teeth with a Q-tip. Leave on for no more than one minute (the acid is strong enough to break down tooth enamel) and gently scrub off with a toothbrush.

• But swiping a cotton swab with a little lemon juice is just as effective. Try doing this before bed and washing your face the next morning to prevent oily skin.

• Combine lemon juice and hair conditioner, comb through strands, sit in the sun for a few hours and wash out. Repeat these steps at least once a week, and you will notice that your hair is significantly lighter.

• Strengthen nails using olive oil and lemon juice. The solution will not only condition weak and brittle nails, but it will also whiten yellowing nails.

• Massaging a combination of household staples like coconut oil, olive oil and raw honey with lemon juice onto your scalp is a simple solution for dry scalp and dandruff.

• Another overnight beauty treatment that only requires slicing open a lemon is an exfoliant for chapped lips. Rub the fruit onto your pucker, then wash off the next morning. The lemon juice will remove any dead skin cells so that your lipstick goes on super smooth.

• Make a homemade cleanser with lemon juice, yogurt and an essential oil like lavender or chamomile. Massage this on to remove dirt and bacteria, while moisturising your skin at the same time.

• Also, don’t forget lemon juice squeezed into your glass of water is a fabulous internal cleansing treat for your body!

Savon de Marseille Aloe Vera Soap

lynne travis

Our 125g Savon de Marseille Aloe Vera Soap is beautifully enriched with BIO shea butter. Artisan handcrafted French vegetable soap, certified without animal fat and made in Marseille from rigorously selected raw materials.

Aloe Vera has been used in skin care for thousands of years. Egyptian queens such as Cleopatra and Nefertiti believed that bathing in 'the plant of immortality' would enhance and prolong their beauty. Alexander The Great used Aloe Vera as a healing solution for wounded soldiers on the battlefield. In early modern medicine, it was used to heal and calm the skin. It is known as the “miracle plant” in Ayurvedic medicine.

These days Aloe Vera is included in many of skin creams and cosmetics. In fact, many skin care and make up products list Aloe Vera as the first ingredient, as a highly beneficial replacement for water. Its benefits are due to a combination of a very wide range of goodies including Vitamins A and B, folic acid, enzymes, proteins, amino acids, and good fatty acids.

Aloe Vera extract is best obtained from the flesh of its inner leaf. Aloe Vera juice, extract or oil helps rejuvenate the skin and promote healing of wounds and treatment of sunburn. It also adds a wonderful texture to soaps, leaving the skin soft and smooth.

The Aloe, which has a pH similar to our own skin, is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is also known for its ability to relieve itching and its moisturising effect on the skin. It is soothing, emollient, antibacterial, promotes the growth of new skin, moisturises, and protects against the effects of ageing. It is rich in natural moisture and also helps the skin keep its natural moisture too.

Use this French beauty bar to cleanse from head-to-toe, even on your face. It will help to soothe inflammation, and its antiseptic properties can be used to cleanse sunburns, cuts, and other minor abrasions. Most over-the-counter soap is made with harsh chemicals that strip your skin of its natural pH balance. However, aloe’s pH is similar to that of natural skin pH, so you can cleanse without any harsh drying effects.

When you use our Aloe Vera savon de Marseille bar as your daily soap, you will enjoy super soft and ultra-hydrated skin. The combination of aloe and shea butter provide you with a cleaner that doubles as your daily moisturiser. This gentle cleanser is perfect for the entire family, even for young infants and children!

French Donkey Milk Soap

Our Lait d'Anesse soap is made with all-natural donkey milk. Donkey’s milk has been synonymous with youth and eternal beauty since ancient times with it's skin softening and moisturising properties.

Our Lait d'Anesse soap is the skin care choice ideal for many reasons:

• It Is Fragrance Free And Gentle
Our Lait d'Anesse soap is ideal for all skin types - including babies, children, and anyone with extremely sensitive skin. While all of our handmade French soaps are chemical-free, we realize that some essential oils may still irritate individuals with sensitive skin - making this soap an ideal selection.

• Anti-Aging Properties
One of the many reasons Cleopatra turned to Lait d'Anesse soap is because of its anti-aging properties. This includes its ability to soften, smooth, tone, and moisturise. It is also full of essential vitamins that your skin requires to remain young and healthy. It also helps to slow and reverse fine lines cause by aging or repetitive movements such as smiling.

• Relieves Skin Conditions
Donkey's milk is very high in fatty acids and vitamins and contains anti-bacterial proteins and anti-allergens. It is reputed to alleviate skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, as well as asthma and bronchitis.

• Vitamin Rich
Donkey milk has nearly four times the amount of vitamin C that is found in cow's milk, and is incredibly tolerable. It is also full of vitamins, proteins, minerals and essential fatty acids, making it an ideal tonic for skincare.

• Allergy Friendly
Donkey milk is vitamin-rich and contains anti-bacterial proteins and anti-allergens — substances that regulate the immune system, countering allergic reactions.

Our Verbena Soap is French and is made by Savon de Marseille, a french soap maker. The ingredients are 100% natural and have not been tested on animals as well as being enriched with soothing shea butter.

Lemon Verbena, also known as Herb Louisa and Aloysia Triphylla, is native to Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Central America. This plant was named after Maria Luisa, the Princess of Parma. It was brought into Europe by the returning Spanish sometime in the 17th or 18th century. Lemon Verbena flowers its pretty purple buds during August to October. It blooms during late summer and is used for its strong lemon scent. The essential oil is extracted from this herb that has various healing properties.

Lemon verbena oil has actually been made use of for centuries and it was a well-known therapeutic oil throughout the Victorian era. Particularly for healing muscle spasms, indigestion and also as a sedative.

Lemon Verbena is known for its therapeutic properties today. It breaks down cellulite, and hence, offers a healing, toning and relaxing effect to the skin. That is the reason this herb is often used in the preparation of natural soaps. Lemon Verbena soap suits all skin types and makes the skin feel soft and toned. The essential oil of this herb is gentle on the skin and helps maintain the proper balance of the skin’s natural oils. The soap helps to give the skin an even tone.

Lemon Verbena has mild astringent qualities that help in cleaning the skin and getting rid of bacteria that cause acne and pimples. It also aids in getting rid of mild facial scars and blemishes.

The Lemon Verbena oil present in the soap gets rid of excess sebum and pollutants from the skin without causing excessive dryness. It also gets rid of bacteria that cause acne, thereby leaving you with a blemish-free skin.

lynne travis

Candles are a great accompaniment to any dining table, but during the Easter period they are really the perfect addition. Candles are a delightful way of making this Spring holiday extra special.

Easter Candle Setting

During Easter candles are symbolic of Jesus, resurrection, rebirth and also new life. It is an Easter candle that leads the procession into the church at the Easter Vigil and thus becomes a dominant symbol for the season. Historically it is the Easter candle that first announces the news of the resurrection. In western Christianity a Paschal candle is used for this purpose, it is tall, bright, decorative, stately, it creates the first light in celebration of the resurrection. This large white candle is used in religious faiths such as the Roman Catholic Church, the Anglican Communion, and Lutheran churches, among others. A new Paschal candle is blessed and lit every year at Easter, and is used throughout the Easter season and then throughout the year on special occasions. The term "Paschal" comes from the word Pesach, which in Hebrew means Passover, and relates to the Paschal mystery of salvation; of one of the central concepts of Catholic faith. It is sometimes referred to as the "Easter candle" or the "Christ candle."

We have some beautiful elegant Easter candles which are perfectly suited for the Easter period. At The Candle Tree we sell St Eval white classic candles tied in bundles of 4. Spring into Easter!

lynne travis

Easter is nearly upon us and it felt like a long winter wait but Spring is well and truly here! The countryside is bursting with daffodils and awash with lively spring lambs!

Here are some intriguing facts about Easter:

• The name Easter owes its origin from Eastre, the Anglo-Saxon goddess who symbolises hare and egg.

• Easter is the celebration of the resurrection of Christ three days after his death. It is the oldest Christian holiday and the most important day of the church year. However, unlike most days in the Christian calendar, Easter does not have a fixed date.

• Easter doesn’t fall on a fixed date in the normal Gregorian or Julian calendars, which follow the cycle of the sun. Instead is determined by the lunar calendar, which is based on the phases of the moon.

• Easter is scheduled to fall on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox around April 14. So, in Western Christianity, Easter will always fall between March 22nd and April 25th.

• Even before the birth of Christianity, the egg was seen as a symbol of Spring, a celebration of the rebirth and reinvigoration after the harshness of winter.

• The Mesopotamians - an ancient Christian community living in an area roughly covered today by Iraq, Syria and Kuwait - used to stain eggs red to symbolise the blood of Christ.

• Eggs would then be cracked against one another, leaving just empty shells - a symbol of the empty tomb Jesus left behind. The tradition survives today in the shape of egg rolling, representing the rolling away of the rock from Jesus' tomb.

• Over time, Easter eggs became more and more elaborately decorated, perhaps most famously by Russian jeweller Peter Carl Fabergé, creator of the priceless Fabergé eggs as Easter gifts for Tsars Alexander III and Nicholas II.

famous-easter-eggs-by-faberge-in-st-petersburg.jpg

• In 2007, a Fabergé egg covered in diamonds sold for almost £9 million. This egg is very special because, every hour, a cockerel made of jewels pops up from the top of the egg, flaps its wings four times, nods it's head three times and makes a crowing noise!

• The gesture of giving eggs at Easter has been traced back to Egyptians, Persians, Gauls, Greeks and Romans. Back then the egg was a symbol of life. Christians consider Easter eggs to symbolise joy and celebration, new life and resurrection.

• The introduction of chocolate eggs is a relatively new phenomenon, originating in France and Germany in the 19th century. As chocolate production became more sophisticated, the Easter festival, like Christmas, became more marketable. The first chocolate egg in the UK was produced in 1873 by Fry’s of Bristol.

• Every child in the UK receives an average of 8.8 Easter eggs every year – double their recommended calorie intake for a whole week. When tucking into a chocolate bunny rabbit, 76% of people bite the ears off first.

• The Easter Bunny tradition made its way to the US in the 18th century. It is believed to have originated in Europe where it was actually the Easter Hare. Other Easter traditions include wearing Easter bonnets, making Easter baskets and having Easter egg hunts.

• The white lily, the symbol of the resurrection, is the special Easter flower.

• The Ukrainian traditional act of painting eggs is called Pysanka. The word Pysanka comes from the verb pysaty, "to write", as traditionally designs are not painted on, but written with beeswax.

Useful Candle Burning Tips

lynne travis

For a great relaxing candle experience, you need to adhere to proper candle care and maintenance. The first time you burn a candle is important, and as a rule candles should burn one hour for every 1 inch in the diameter of the actual candle size.

One of the problems that can occur when burning a candle is when wax forms around the outside of the wax vessel. This is referred to as a ‘memory ring’ or 'tunnelling'. Eventually the candle becomes difficult to light and drowns out from the wax melting down on top of it. To prevent this, the first time you light the candle do not trim the wick. Depending on the wax and size of the vessel, you may need a flame that burns large and hot enough to melt the wax all the way to the edge. However, if, after you light the wick, there is any smoke at all, then extinguish the flame and trim the wick slightly. Let the candle burn long enough to get the entire top liquid wax, if doesn't melt all the way to the edge don't panic, but get as close as you can. After the first burn, try to let the candle burn for long stretches as often as you can to keep that really wide opening and prevent tunneling later on.

Yankee Candles have a solution for these problems with their Illuma-Lid. This sits on top of their house warmer jars and helps steady the flame to keep a nice even wax burn inside.

However, if your candle has already tunnelled and you can't fix the candle there's still ways to enjoy the fragrance. You can either place the candle on a candle warmer and melt the wax that way without lighting the candle. Though you won't be able to enjoy the ambiance of a burning candle, you will be able to enjoy the fragrance. You can also remove the dry, hard wax and place it in small portions on the top of a tealight warmer. This is another way to warm the wax without lighting the candle. A nice little tealight candle under the warmer adds some ambiance and candlelight while the scented wax on top provides fragrance. Use caution with all these techniques to ensure the wax doesn't become too hot and ignite. Always follow the manufacturers instructions for maximum burn times.

CANDLE SAFETY RULES

• Always burn your candle on a heat resistant surface, keep it away from any breezes or drafts, to minimize smoke.

• Never leave your candle unattended whilst lit, and keep out of reach of children and pets.

• Always keep a burning candle within sight. Extinguish all candles when leaving a room or before going to sleep. Be sure the wick ember is no longer glowing.

• Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Keep burning candles away from furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, flammable decorations, etc.

• Keep burning candles out of the reach of children and pets. Although candles may smell like food, they are not edible.

• Always use a candle-holder specifically designed for candle use. The holder should be heat resistant, sturdy, and large enough to contain any drips or melted wax.

• Be sure the candle-holder is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface. This can help prevent heat damage to underlying surfaces and prevent glass containers from breaking.

• We suggest trimming the wick every 4 hours of burn time. When wick trimming, always extinguish the flame, let the candle come to room temperature, and trim the wick to 1/4 of inch before relighting. Long or crooked wicks can cause uneven burning and dripping, we recommend Yankee Candle wick trimmer for a clean safe cut.

• Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches and debris at all times.

• If your candle is burning unevenly, simply move the extinguished wick to the center with spoon, handle while the wax is still soft.

• Keep burning candles away from drafts, vents, ceiling fans and air currents. This will help prevent rapid, uneven burning, and avoid flame flare-ups and sooting. Drafts can also blow nearby lightweight items into the flame where they could catch fire.

• Always burn candles in a well-ventilated room. Don’t burn too many candles in a small room or in a poor ventilated area.

• Storing your candle is easy, but important to retain the fragrance oils which can be sensitive to temperature and light. Make sure your unused candles are stored in a dark place away from direct sunlight, like a cupboard or box to repent fading and discolouration.

• Never touch or move a burning candle or container candle when the wax is liquid.

• Never use a knife or sharp object to remove wax drippings from a glass holder. It might scratch, weaken, or cause the glass to break upon subsequent use.

• Place burning candles at least three inches apart from one another. This helps ensure they don’t melt one another, or create their own drafts to cause improper burning.

• Use a snuffer to extinguish a candle. It’s the safest way to prevent hot wax splatters.

Candle-Snuffer-24cm.jpg

• Never extinguish candles with water. The water can cause the hot wax to splatter and might cause a glass container to break.

• Be very careful if using candles during a power outage. Flashlights and other battery powered lights are safer sources of light during a power failure.

• Extinguish a candle if it repeatedly smokes, flickers, or the flame becomes too high.  The candle isn’t burning properly. Cool, trim the wick, then check for drafts before relighting.

• Never use a candle as a night light.

• Always read and follow the manufacturer’s use and safety instructions carefully. Don’t burn a candle longer than the manufacturer recommends.

• Don’t burn a candle all the way down. Extinguish the flame if it comes too close to the holder or container. For a margin of safety, discontinue burning a candle when 2 inches of wax remains or ½ inch if in a container. Once there is only half an inch of wax remaining of your candle, you should cease using it. This prevents possible heat damage to the underneath surface or the vessel itself.

• Some candle brands are designed to self-extinguish, such as Yankee Candle and Root. This function brings added peace of mind. However, it's important that you trim your wick to 1/4 inch from the top of the candle before each use.
